Common Misconceptions about Hypnosis

brain forming new neural circuits

1. I Won’t Be in Control

During hypnosis, you go into a state of deep relaxation in which your conscious mind and body are ‘asleep’ but your subconscious mind is alert.

In this state, you cannot be made to believe or do anything that is not already aligned with your values and core intent.

This is because your subconscious mind is responsible for your day-to-day functioning and wellbeing, and it contains all the data about who you are and what you believe.

Thus, its job is to protect you, and it will not allow in exaggerated suggestions that do not align with its framework of self-preservation.

Therefore, you are absolutely ‘in control’ while in hypnosis, perhaps even more so than when you are in a conscious state, because in a conscious state, you only have access to limited information, but in hypnosis, you have access to a wider breadth of information.

It is ironic ~ when we surrender to relaxation, we are actually more ‘in control’ than when we try to manage everything through sheer willpower.

2. Hypnosis is Mystical

Hypnosis is actually a natural state that we move in and out of several times a day.

For instance, when we are on ‘autopilot’ when driving a familiar route home or mindlessly watching television, we are in a state of hypnosis.

This is when alpha brain waves are activated, slowing down brain activity and moving it from conscious awareness to sub-conscious awareness.

As we are falling asleep, our brain activity naturally slows down and moves from beta to alpha and theta. This signifies the brain moving from a state of arousal, concentration, and alertness (beta) to relaxation and trance (aka hypnosis) (alpha and theta). This is when our minds relax enough to give us access to new inspiration, information, and ideas.

3. Hypnosis is Only for Stage Shows

As explained earlier, hypnosis is a natural state that is part of our daily functioning. In a hypnotherapy session, you are purposefully inducted into that state to allow better access to information that is needed for healing and creating positive change.

The truth is that in hypnosis, our minds are more receptive to new ideas because the filters of our conscious mind are subsided. Therefore, in this state of dreamy relaxation, the mind gets excited about change and accepts positive suggestions that the conscious mind may otherwise deem ‘unrealistic’ or ‘impossible.’

The conscious mind’s job is to keep you functioning within a strict set of behaviors and thought patterns because it wants to keep you safe out in the world.

Thus, when surrendered into a state of subconscious relaxation through hypnosis, the mind opens up (because it knows you’re safe ~ because your body is relaxed) and it lets in new ideas, creating new neural pathways in your brain.

This is an excellent state to master bringing yourself in and out of, in order to better work with your own mind.
